MARY SUES
Concept Art

SERIES PITCH Blue Ribbon Entertainment, then subsidiary of Warner Bros Discovery

While working on the Getting It Together comic-book series, I was hired to illustrate concept art for a series pitch to Warner Bros/The CW. The show centered on a single female, early twenty-something freelance comic book artist. She’s just getting started and lives in Portland. They wanted the drawings to show her at work in her natural environment on any random day, and to feature a few items you could find in her art studio (her apartment, for realism).

I literally looked around my apartment and just drew what I saw, albeit a more tidy version. Not pictured: lots and lots of receipts, and a cat. For the splash page (jargon!) that she’s inking, I was asked to create a battle royale scene with a costumed Bill Nye type watching in the background. The show didn’t get picked up.

Incidentally, check out Helioscope — shortly before taking this project, I’d spent a long weekend with some of its denizens at an overnight camp for comics professionals in the rainforests of Juneau, Alaska. Where’s that tv series?
